CPSC Press Release: The Hive Announces Recall to Repair Revl Carbon Road Bicycle Brakes Due to Fall Hazard
Specifics
The Hive is undertaking a voluntary recall action for all brakes sold starting in September of 2009 through August of 2010.
Your Revl Carbon Road Brake system by The Hive may be the subject of a safety recall. If your bike has a Revl Carbon Road Brake system installed, STOP RIDING YOUR BIKE until you determine whether your brakes are part of this recall.
Check the date code of your brakes. The date code is marked on the underside of both carbon arms, and will consist of two numbers and a letter. Brakes with a date code of 41B, 44B, 45B, 53B, 13C and 16C are included. For Help locating the date code on your brake, please consult the Recall Poster attached below.
Note: Some 53B, 13C, and 16C date code brakes have already been retrofitted with new rockers from the factory. Consumers with these brakes can identify their rocker as either new or old by referring to the “Identify your rocker” document below to tell whether their rockers are affected or not. When in doubt, please contact us!
If you have an affected brake set, bring it to the bicycle dealer where you purchased the brakes for inspection and repair, or contact The Hive at the number below for parts to repair your brake. For questions about this recall, please call toll free:

Frequently Asked Questions

Your date code is located on the underside of each carbon arm.
Q: How do I know if my brakes are part of the recall?
A: Locate the Date Code printed on the underside of the carbon arms on your brakes. If your brakes are engraved with one of the following date codes, your brakes are part of the recall: 41B, 44B, 45B, 53B, 13C, 16C.
Q: What should I do if my brakes are part of the recall?
A: Stop riding your brakes immediately! Contact the shop who sold you your brakes, and set up a date to have your brakes repaired. Alternately, you may contact The Hive directly for parts to repair your brakes, using instructions which will be provided.
Q: My brakes are part of the recall – why are my brakes being recalled?
A: The brake cable is attached to the rocker on the Revl brake using a screw and clamp washer. The barrel on the rocker with the threaded hole for the cable clamp screw may crack during normal use of the brake. Once cracked, it is possible that your brake cable may come loose, and the brakes will stop working.
Q: My brakes are part of the recall – will I get a new set of brakes?
A: It is not necessary to replace your brakes for the recall. The Hive will provide you or your shop with replacement rockers for your brakes. A simple five-minute repair will replace your old, defective rockers with the new parts. (The rocker on the Revl brake is designed to be replaceable to allow different leverage ratio rockers to be used.)
Q: My brakes are part of the recall, but they are not cracked. Is it okay to keep riding them?
A: All Revl brakes affected by the recall should be repaired before continuing to ride. Although most rockers will not show signs of cracking, it is important to replace the old rocker with the new design before cracking can occur.
Q: I am not close enough to the shop where I bought my brakes to have them repair the brakes. How can I get my brakes repaired?
A: Please call us at The Hive, and we can help find a local shop to repair your brakes. Alternately, we can provide the replacement rockers to you, and if you feel comfortable doing so, you may perform the repair yourself using the instructions found below.
